Cheney Chief Of Staff Scooter Libby Indicted on 5 Counts

I've leafed through the indictment (available here) and noticed a few things.
This is not your average accusation of perjury. As conservatives will surely remind us, people are often indicted on the assumption they lied to a jury. In the case of Libby, there's no question. Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald has noted at least 9 specific dates when Scooter Libby was told of/divulged information regarding Valerie Plame.
a. During a conversation with Tim Russert of NBC News on July 10 or 11, 2003, Russert asked LIBBY if LIBBY was aware that Wilson’s wife worked for the CIA. LIBBY responded to Russert that he did not know that, and Russert replied that all the reporters knew it. LIBBY was surprised by this statement because, while speaking with Russert, LIBBY did not recall that he previously had learned about Wilson’s wife’s employment from the Vice President.
Libby is no idiot. He's an accomplished attorney, long-time top aide, and has held a security clearance for ages. How could Libby be so dumb? The simple fact of the matter is that Libby wouldn't commit perjury and lie for two years about Plamegate unless something prompted him to do so. There's (obviously) something deeper here, and chances are he's taking the bullet for Cheney's idiocy.
